Drain Cleaning vs. Hydrojetting — Which Do You Need?
When your drain is clogged, there are two main professional methods to clear it: standard cable drain cleaning and hydrojetting. Each has its place, and choosing the right one depends on the type and severity of your clog.
Standard Drain Cleaning (Cable/Snake)
How it works: A rotating steel cable with a cutting head is fed into the drain pipe to physically break through the blockage and pull debris back out.
Best for: Hair clogs, food blockages, paper products, and most household drain clogs.
Cost: $125–$350 in Dallas.
Limitations: Clears the blockage but does not clean the pipe walls. Grease buildup and mineral deposits remain and can cause the clog to return.
Hydrojetting
How it works: A high-pressure hose with a specialized nozzle sends water at 3,000–4,000 PSI through the pipe, blasting away everything — grease, scale, roots, and debris — and leaving the pipe interior clean.
Best for: Recurring clogs, heavy grease buildup, tree root intrusion, and commercial drain lines.
Cost: $350–$600 in Dallas.
Limitations: Not suitable for severely damaged or fragile pipes. A camera inspection should be done first to verify the pipe can handle the pressure.
Which Should You Choose?
First-time clog in a single drain? Standard cable cleaning is sufficient and more affordable.
Clog keeps coming back? Hydrojetting clears the entire pipe and removes the buildup that causes recurring blockages.
Tree roots in the sewer line? Hydrojetting cuts roots more effectively than cables and cleans the pipe walls to slow regrowth.
