How to Find Your Water Shutoff Valve in Dallas, TX
Every Dallas homeowner should know where their main water shutoff valve is before an emergency happens. When a pipe bursts or a major leak occurs, shutting off the water supply within the first few minutes can prevent thousands of dollars in damage.
Where to Look
Near the water meter: In most Dallas homes, the main shutoff valve is located near the water meter, typically at the front of your property near the street. Look for a metal cover in the ground. Inside you will find the meter and a valve handle.
In the garage: Many Dallas homes, especially those built after 1990, have a shutoff valve where the main water line enters the house through the garage wall. Look along the bottom of the wall facing the street.
In a utility closet: Some homes have the shutoff valve in an interior utility or mechanical closet, near the water heater.
At the foundation wall: In older Dallas homes, the valve may be on the exterior of the house where the water line enters through the foundation. Check the front or side of the house at ground level.
How to Shut Off the Water
Gate valve (round handle): Turn clockwise until it stops. These valves are common in older homes. If the valve has not been turned in years, it may be stiff — use gentle, steady pressure.
Ball valve (lever handle): Turn the lever 90 degrees so it is perpendicular to the pipe. These are common in newer homes and operate more reliably than gate valves.
Meter valve: If you cannot find or operate the house shutoff, you can turn off the water at the meter. This requires a meter key or adjustable wrench. Turn the valve so it is perpendicular to the pipe.
